On this day in 2012, I was lucky enough to visit Universiti Tenaga Nasional in Malaysia, where I gave a presentation on iPhone programming. The folks on campus couldn’t have been nicer, and I was especially pleased to see this poster all over campus.

Malaysia Poster with a photo of a different Steve

At the time I had no idea who the handsome gentleman with the drumsticks was – it’s definitely not me, but I guess if someone said “We should make a poster for this iOS programming event” and you did an image search in 2012 for Steve Hayman, that might show up.

I’ve since learned through extensive searching that that photo is probably Steve Hayman of the popular UK wedding band Saucy Flapdragons. Here’s that Steve in action -

The poster probably shows that Steve Hayman. And it’s probably not Steve “Hamie” Hayman, noted lead vocalist of the Scottish heavy metal band Heavy Pettin' - here THEY are in action -

I am happy that the Steves Hayman of the world are contributing their musical talents across a variety of genres – in fact, around a decade ago at the Apple education sales meeting, we used the general principle of “Hey, why not, how bad could it be” to form a twelve piece Sales Band called the Intercontinental Drifters, which rocked the after dinner entertainment so hard that most people left promptly to get a drink at the bar. Here’s the EduHorns horn section -

EduHorns

L to R: Mike Wolk, sax; Chris Cummins, trumpet; Yours Truly, trombone; Dave Douglas, bari sax.

You can tell we’re serious about this whole horn section thing because of the hats.

I’m sure you’re also imagining combining the Intercontinental Drifters, Heavy Pettin' and the Saucy Flapdragons into the ultimate supergroup, the Intercontinental Heavy Flapdragons, featuring Steve Hayman on drums, Steve Hayman on trombone and Steve Hayman, lead vocalist.
