For the longest time, Canada has had a popular chain of pizza restaurants called “Boston Pizza” - which is a strange name; its founder named it after ‘a city he hoped to one day visit.’

In my travels I have come across other oddly-geographically-named pizza restaurants. It makes me wonder what would be the longest chain you could construct of strangely-named pizza restaurants. And what’s the distance between the restaurant and its namesake? And what’s the longest discrepancy? We shall call this measure the Geographic Pizza Inaccuracy (GPI) factor and use the excellent Great Circle Mapper web site as arbiter. (Thanks to Nader for the assist.)

GPI: 1,492 miles

Houston

GPI: 1,416 miles

New York

… and, of course, New York must have four million pizza restaurants. You can go search to add to this chain.

The Grand Pizza Tour so far -

the end of the chain or possibly the beginning

I’m not sure how the ultimate chain would end, but I will point out that in Singapore once I noticed a delivery driver for Canadian Pizza, whatever that is. This is likely to be the overall winner in Geographic Pizza Inaccuracy.

GPI: 9,207 miles

update

Here’s another candidate for insertion into the chain.

London

I have just been informed of Tehran Pizza London, UK.

GPI: 2,754 miles
